Anna Forbes Liddell was born in 1891 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Liddell received her A.B. in 1918 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.A. at Cornell. She completed a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in 1925 with a dissertation entitled "Alexander's Space, Time, and Deity".
